The journey to primary school is a grand adventure! At Jabberwocky, we want our explorers to be fully equipped. Here are 10 things your child will need to be truly school-ready:

  1. The "Great Coat" Challenge 🧥

Can they zip up against the wind? Mastering zips, buttons, and poppers is a fantastic way to ensure your child feels independent during break times and outdoor play.

  1. Bathroom Bravery 🚽

Being able to use the "big" toilets and managing their own clothes is a core skill. Don't forget to emphasise the importance of a good 20-second hand wash!

  1. The Lunchtime Hero 🍎

Opening a stubborn crisp packet or a drink carton is a rite of passage. Practise these skills during weekend lunches so they feel like a pro when they head to the school canteen.

  1. The Art of Sharing 🎲

Playing with others involves compromise. Practising "your turn, my turn" at home prepares them for the collaborative environment of a Reception classroom.

  1. Following the Map 🗺️

Teachers give a lot of directions! Practise giving your child multi-part instructions at home—like "Put your toy in the box and then find your shoes"—to build their processing skills.

  1. Reading the Signs 🏷️

Being able to identify their name in print is like having a secret key. It helps them navigate the classroom and ensures their favourite jumper actually makes it back home!

  1. Muscle Power 🖐️

From climbing frames to colouring, "big school" is physical. Activities like kneading dough or using safety scissors prepare their hands for the hard work of learning to write.

  1. Using Their Voice 🎤

Encourage your child to speak up if they need something. Whether it’s asking for a tissue or reporting a scraped knee, clear communication is a superpower in a busy school.

  1. Saying See You Later! 👋

Independence starts with a confident goodbye. We encourage parents to keep morning drop-offs upbeat and short, helping children build the resilience they need for the school gate.

  1. An Inquisitive Mind 🔎

The most important thing a child can bring to school is a "can-do" attitude and a curiosity about the world. Keep exploring, keep asking questions, and keep the fun in learning!

How we support our children:

At Jabberwocky, we are dedicated to preparing our children for a flying start at primary school by nurturing their independence and confidence. Our school readiness programme is led by Kath, our qualified teacher, who ensures there is so much more to learning than just holding a pencil! Kath plans an exciting weekly schedule filled with real-world challenges like money games and playground classics like noughts and crosses. These sessions are a fantastic way to encourage social interaction and the art of sharing, all while exploring mathematical concepts—including numbers, shapes, and measures—and helping children understand and regulate their big emotions.

Combined with our daily visits to The Arboretum Forest School, caring for our resident guinea pigs and giant snails, and our weekly minibus outings to the beach or local farms, we ensure our little Jabberwockies are curious, capable, and emotionally ready for any challenge the school day brings.
