It's coming up for that most wonderful time of the year once again! Hopefully this year is looking a lot more like Christmas than last year. To help you get in the Christmas spirit here are some amazing things to do near to us at Jabberwocky for you and your children. If we've forgotten anything please feel free to add to the comments section at the end of this post!
Christmas in Colours' at Avebury!
This year the theme at Avebury is 'Christmas in Colours' taking you through the crystal whites of frosty winter to the warm tones of the fire side. Each of the rooms in Avebury Manor will be decorated in a different colour. Enjoy the russet reds and oranges of the Tudor Parlour, see the beautiful blue and purple handmade peacock that sits at the head of the table in the Georgian Dining Room, the evergreen shades in the Billard Room and many more discoveries as you journey through the ages.
There's a family area in the Withdrawing Room with children’s toys and stories under a rainbow tree. There will also be a ‘tree of hope’ where visitors can add their wish for the new year.
Winter at Montacute House!
Montacute House sleeps as winter falls. The family have departed for the yuletide season, and the house has been put to bed. However, all is not as it should be…
In the house (open every day 11am to 3pm with last entry at 2.30pm), the remains of a decedent yuletide party have been discovered. Greenery and candles adorn the rooms and the atmosphere is charged.
During your journey through candlelit rooms, use your wits to uncover who was responsible for this festive feasting.
Enjoy the story, the mystery and the house being seen from a totally different perspective this winter. Is it possible to glean some clues amongst the lavish display of merrymaking that Montacute House has played host to?
The festivities will begin on 3 December 2021 and will continue into the New Year, ending on 6 January 2022. Montacute House is closed on on 24 and 25 December.
Christmas at Tyntesfield!
This special time of year gets off to a magical start as you step back into a Christmas past at Tyntesfield.
There'll be decorations from 2 December - 2 January, handmade over the past few years by the Christmas volunteer fairies scattered across the outdoors. Wherever possible, they've used recycled items or elements from the estate.
The grandest Christmas tree of all will be outside the house, and there will be more dotted around the estate for you to spot.
Percy the Park Keeper's winter wander trail at Fyne Court!
This winter, treat your little ones to a world of adventures at Fyne Court on the Percy the Park Keeper's winter wander trail. Join in the fun with Percy and his animal friends and give nature a helping hand.
West Somerset Railway's Winter Lights!
At Bishops Lydeard Station, the magic begins. A seat aboard an illuminated train awaits, ready to take you on an unforgettable winter journey. Travel along our enchanted track, through woodlands and countryside transformed for the season. Spectacular lineside displays will shine and glow, to the amazement of the whole family. An encapsulating tale will unfold along the way, before you arrive at Crowcombe Heathfield, where you will gaze in wonderment through the carriage windows at a famous station steeped in festive spirit. It's then back to Bishops Lydeard in your cosy, comfortable carriage before your wonderful Winterlights journey becomes Christmas memories to treasure. Snacks and drinks will be available to purchase before hand in the welcome marquee and from the train buffet once underway. Goodie bags are available to purchase with your tickets, and will be collected from the marque when you arrive. Tickets must be booked online in advance.
Illuminate: Christmas Illuminations at Hestercombe Gardens!
Experience Hestercombe's historic gardens as never before, on our colourful illuminated winter trail, ILLUMINATE!
Extending the popular colourful lights which adorn the route to Father Christmas’s grotto, ILLUMINATE will light up the entirety of Rook Wood with a beautiful multicoloured display, including its natural features and terrain, before taking you through the light-studded Yew Tunnel and onto a stunning, dynamic pixel display on the turning circle by Hestercombe House.
Bring the whole family to enjoy this lovely light experience, and finish up with a rich hot chocolate or homemade sausage roll from Caffe + Gelato, whilst watching the fire pit crackle away under the twinkling fairy lights in the glass-covered courtyard.
Father Christmas at Hestercombe Gardens!
Visit Hestercombe this Christmas to enjoy a magical Father Christmas experience, where every child can meet the man in red and receive their own special gift. When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by one of our friendly Hestercombe elves, who’ll hand you a special activity pack full of festive fun.
When Father Christmas is ready, you’ll wander through the winter gardens to the man himself. In his magical garden folly, the log fire will be roaring, lights will be twinkling on the Christmas tree and sacks of presents will be waiting…
A visit to Father Christmas is extra special in the dark as you can wander along the illuminated pathway to his garden hideout.
After seeing Father Christmas, children can enjoy taking part in our Christmas gardens trails, followed by a visit to the Stables Café for festive hot chocolate and other winter treats.
Santa Express at Bishops Lydeard!
Back for 2021, the ever-popular Santa Express service from Bishops Lydeard is now available to book! Make memories to treasure for a lifetime on this family favourite - the Santa Express. Step aboard the festively decorated heritage carriages, filled with Christmas cheer and excitement and take a wonderful journey through West Somerset's winter woodlands. Santa's presents and refreshments will be waiting at your table and he'll be along for the ride to ensure you have received them! A round trip to Williton means there will be plenty of time aboard to soak up the experience, get in the festive spirit or relax with some refreshments whilst enjoying the journey. Additional snacks and drinks will be available from the welcome marquee at Bishops Lydeard and from the buffet on the train. Be quick! Tickets for each train are limited and must be booked in advance.
Chew Valley Christmas Fayre!
Join in the festive fun at Bishop Sutton Pre-School for the Chew Valley Christmas Fayre, on Saturday 9 December at Bishop Sutton Village Hall from 12:00 - 16:00.
There will be a host of festive suppliers of gifts and produce, including local Christmas trees and decorations and plenty of magic and sparkle for little guests with Christmas crafting workshops and Santa Story-time sessions. There will also be a fabulous grand raffle draw of prizes kindly donated from stallholders and local businesses, tombola and all your fayre favourites. This is the perfect way to get your family in the Christmas spirit!
While you browse exhibitors and the kids enjoy the crafts, why not treat yourself to some of our delicious Christmas refreshments? These include Yule Dogs and spiced mulled wine, all profits will be donated to Bishop Sutton Pre-School. Entrance is £1 for adults and children go free!
Glastonbury Frost Fayre!
The Glastonbury Frost Fayre is An Extravaganza of Seasonal Magnificence When the whole community comes together to Celebrate’Peace and Goodwill to All’ at this Festive Time of Year. There will be stalls and late night shopping. Other Attractions include: • Father Christmas and his helper Fairies and Elves • All day buskers and live street entertainment.
Christmas Market and Christmas Tree Sale at Sourdown Farm!
Come and buy your Christmas tree and explore the Christmas market. Enjoy Mulled wine, cider and hot chocolate with proceeds going to Butleigh Primary School. Parking is availble at the Rose and Portcullis pub.
Carols by Candlelight at Meare Fish House!
All welcome to The Fish House with your lanterns and torches, wrap up warm, get festive and sing some wonderful carols together!
