As the date approaches for our pre-school parents to receive their school placement news, the excitement at Jabberwocky Nursery is palpable. Moving on to primary school is a significant milestone, and we are dedicated to ensuring every child feels confident, prepared, and celebrated as they take this next step.
Here is how we support our children—and you—during this transition period.
1. Opening the Conversation
Once school places are confirmed, we will reach out via email to find out where your little ones will be heading in September. Whether you update us via email or during a chat at drop-off, this information allows us to begin tailoring our support.
We start by integrating "school talk" into our daily routine through:
Gentle Curiosity: We engage the children in light conversations about their new schools, discussing things like uniform colours or how they will travel there each morning.
Storytime: Our staff share carefully selected books about starting school during circle time. This naturally encourages children to ask questions and helps us identify and soothe any little worries they may have.
2. Building Bridges with Schools
We pride ourselves on our strong relationships with local schools in Street and the surrounding areas.
Teacher Visits: Reception teachers are excellent at coordinating with us. We often welcome them into the nursery to meet the children in a familiar environment, allowing them to observe the children at play.
Transition Profiles: Our team completes comprehensive transition forms for every child. These are shared with you before being sent to the schools, ensuring your child’s new teacher has a well-rounded understanding of their strengths and personality.
Accompanied Visits: While school visits are primarily led by parents, the Jabberwocky team is always here to offer extra support or accompany a child to a visit if needed.
3. Dedicated "School Readiness"
School readiness isn't just a phase at Jabberwocky; it’s part of our daily rhythm. Our Qualified Teacher (QTS), Kath, leads small groups in our dedicated School Readiness Hut. These "short bursts" of learning focus on:
Emotional Resilience: Navigating the feelings that come with big changes.
Academic Foundations: Engaging activities centered on Literacy and Mathematics.
Physical Development: Refining both fine and gross motor skills to prepare for everything from holding a pencil to PE lessons.
4. Celebrating Their Journey
We believe in ending this chapter with a flourish! To mark their time with us, we arrange for:
Graduation Photos: A professional photographer visits to capture that classic "cap and gown" moment—a keepsake parents always treasure.
The Grand Finale: We conclude the term with a wonderful Graduation Party at Forest School. It’s the perfect way to celebrate their growth, surrounded by nature and friends.
We are so proud of our pre-schoolers and look forward to supporting you all through this special transition!
