Shrove Tuesday at Jabberwocky is all about energy, laughter, and the thrill of a good pancake flip. The tradition goes back to medieval times, when people made pancakes to use up ingredients before the fasting season. Today, we keep the spirit alive with joyful cooking and lots of giggles.


Jabberwocky’s Go‑To Pancake Recipe

  • 100g plain flour

  • 2 eggs

  • 300ml milk

  • A dab of butter or oil


Combine everything into a smooth batter, pour into a hot pan, cook until the edges lift, flip (grown‑ups only), and enjoy warm.


Topping Ideas for Hungry Little Helpers

Once the pancakes are cooked, children can personalise their creations with a range of tasty toppings.

  • Fresh fruits like bananas, strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries add colour and natural sweetness.

  • Yoghurt provides a cool, creamy layer children love.

  • Honey or maple syrup can be drizzled lightly for sweetness (not for under‑1s).

  • Nut butter adds a delicious protein‑rich spread.

  • Sprinkles bring fun and sparkle to the plate.

  • Cinnamon and sugar give a warm, comforting finish.

 

Why It’s Fantastic for Little Learners

Pancake making is a treasure trove of learning opportunities. It’s a brilliant way to bond with children, because cooking together encourages teamwork, shared excitement, and a sense of achievement.

There’s a strong maths element — weighing flour, counting stirs, comparing pancake sizes, and timing the cooking.


The activity naturally encourages communication and decision‑making. Children can choose toppings, describe what they see and smell, and talk about their preferences.


Pancake Day can also become a social event. Sharing pancakes with friends or family helps children practise generosity and confidence in group settings.


And of course, it supports:

  • Fine Motor Skills through stirring, pouring, and decorating.

  • Language Skills as children learn new cooking terms.

  • Social Skills through cooperation, patience, and shared enjoyment.

We keep hot pans strictly for adults, ensure sleeves are rolled up, and remind children about safe kitchen behaviour. Everyone washes hands, and all ingredients are checked for allergies.
