Building the foundation: school readiness for lifelong success

The words “school readiness” can sound a little daunting — but really, your child’s whole early journey is about building confidence, curiosity, and a love of learning that will carry them into the future.


At Jabberwocky, we create a Pre-School experience that’s full of wonder, warmth, and discovery. Every child is welcomed for exactly who they are, and supported to grow into independent little learners, equipped with all the life skills they’ll need for the adventures ahead.


Our beautiful Shepherds Huts make a cosy and inspiring home for our school readiness sessions, led by Kath — a qualified teacher with over 20 years of Early Years experience. Kath’s passion shines through in every session, making learning feel natural, exciting, and personal to each child.



Books are at the heart of what we do. Through stories and non-fiction, children learn to anticipate, explore new language, and build a rich vocabulary. Meanwhile, crayon doodles, brushstrokes, and colourful mark-making help strengthen fine motor skills — ready for holding pencils and beginning to write.



Activities like letter games and tracing boards introduce letter formation in a fun, relaxed way, while our environment itself is rich with literacy, encouraging letter recognition and early phonics skills.


Nature is another one of our greatest teachers. A trip to the pond becomes a science experiment — observing Water Boatmen skating across the water, then testing leaves and sticks to see what sinks or floats. Through these playful experiences, children learn to compare, predict, and explore cause and effect.

Early maths sneaks in through games and activities too. Whether it’s small-group number challenges, counting spots on cards, or exploring shapes through puzzles, children are developing vital mathematical thinking in a way that feels like pure fun.


At Jabberwocky, school readiness isn’t a rush to meet targets — it’s about building strong foundations in a way that feels natural, joyful, and inspiring for every child.
